The Mathematics Strands of Sarasas Ektra Secondary Department for students in Yr. 10 - Yr. 11. A project from these 6 Mathematics Strands chose student representatives to present knowledge to Yr. 6 students: “Supporting Mathematics Knowledge” on 11th February 2015. The senior students set up activity bases for junior students to learn mathematical knowledge and have fun at the same time.
There were 6 bases as following:
Base 1: Strand: Numbers and how to calculate:
• Students practiced calculating skills with senior students presenting techniques for fast calculation and calculation shortcuts.
Base 2: Strand: Measurement:
• Students did measurement activities. Senior students set up distances for junior students to estimate. The students measured by stepping it out and they found out that each person had different length of step. This is why we have standard tools such as a ruler and a trundle wheel to measure distances.
Base 3: Strand: Geometry:
• Students had a contest to make a structure that could support the most weight. Students had to use their knowledge of geometry to do this activity.
Base 4: Strand: Algebra:
• Senior students set up many activities such as finding the angle, finding the pattern relationships and finding the answer for algebraic problems.
Base 5: Strand: Analysis of information and probability:
• Students had fun working out the probability when rolling two dice. Students had to find the probability of their rolls when they did the experiment.
Base 6: Strand: Mathematical method:
• There were many types of questions to challenge students. Students had to use knowledge, and mathematical skills to answer.
The ‘Supporting Mathematics Knowledge’ activities ended with senior students presenting gifts to students with high scores. The activities not only supported mathematical knowledge and fun but also created love and strengthened relationships between secondary and primary students.
