Loykrathong Day Activity 2015 With Our Infants and Primary Department

Loy Krathong is a Thai Buddhist festival which started in the olden days. There are many beliefs about this festival such as worshiping and apologizing to the water goddess, thanking her for warding off bad luck but also worshiping the god of Brahmanism or the Buddha's Footprint etc. The Loy Krathong festival is usually celebrated on the first full moon of the Twelfth Lunar Month of every year. It is a time when the water levels of our rivers are high all over the country and the weather is cool.

This year our Infant and Primary Department hosted a Loy Krathong activity on the 25th of November, 2015. This event allowed students to learn the history and the activities that are usually performed during Loy Krathong.

Primary Department:
Students, Thai and Foreign teachers dressed up in beautiful traditional Thai costumes. Students were later shown a video of Loy Krathong's history (narrated in English by our students). They also played question and answer games in relation to Loy Krathong. The Loy Krathong song and dance was presented in four languages: Thai, English, Chinese and Japanese. After that students participated in the Ramwong dance, where students who danced beautifully received a reward. The activities concluded with all students promising to take care of our water resources, keeping it clean and without pollution.

Infant Department:
Students, parents and teachers came to school dressed in traditional Thai costumes that were suitable for the Loy Krathong festival. Students learnt about the various activities that are usually carried out during Loy Krathong through several bases. Our campus was also beautifully decorated to match the Loy Krathong festivities. The bases run on the day contained the following activities:

1. Ramwong base: Students learnt the traditional Ramwong dance. Teachers and parents also joined in with the dance and song called “Ramwong Loy Krathong”.

2. Traditional Thai Games: This base taught students to traditional Thai games such as Banana Rib, Hobby Horse Riding, students learnt how to make the materials used for the games as well as playing with them.

3. Educational Games: In this base, students learnt about Loy Krathong through matching pictures – in colour, using shadows and the spotting the differences etc.

4. Making Krathong base: Teachers and parents joined together to help students make Krathongs. They learnt how to fold banana leaves, sewing the leaves together as well as decorating the Krathong with flowers.

These activities support our students to learn about Thai culture and traditions. They had the opportunity to learn about traditional children’s games, how to make Krathongs as well as giving thanks for the benefits of water and apologizing to the water goddess. Students had fun and enjoyed the day.
