During August 2018, Sarasas Ektra School arranged several National Science Day activities. The aims of these activities are to give praise to the King Rama IV: The Father of Thai Science. The activities raise students’ awareness of science and technology, and encourage students to show their scientific and technological skills. Details of the activities are as follows.
August 17th
Kindergarten department arranged six science activity stations at the auditorium. KG.1 to Year 2 students were invited to attend all the activity stations; rainbow bridge, balloon rocket, doubtful box, blooming flowers, airplane, and dancing beans. Every student had so much fun. Additionally, curiosity and a positive attitude toward science studies were also built amongst the students.
For primary students, Years 3 to 5 students had a chance to visit different activity stations organized by Year 6 students: space station, science laboratory, science for health, urban vegetable farm, science for environment, and science games. There was a Year 6 student standing by in each station who was ready to instruct students how to play, bring all the students into games, and give rewards.
August 21st
Primary department organized the Science Day activity at the auditorium. Different activities were arranged, such as drama show, dance show, and science show. Next, audiences witnessed speeches of students who had won the speech competition. After this, different other events were organized, including presentation of Science Day photos from August 14th to 20th, 2018 and presentation of certificates. Lastly, the ceremony chairperson delivered speech to all the students who attended the activity.
August 24th
Junior secondary students organized a Science Projects show on the ground floor of St. John Bosco building. Years 5 and 6 students were invited to attend the Science Projects show.
The Year 7 students’ show had the theme “Natural Science”. Here, attendees enjoyed different activities such as how to extract color from natural materials, uses of coconut shells, medicinal plants, and the manufacturing of different products from rice.
Year 8s’ show was organized under the theme “Innovative Garbage”, and there were two shows: Paper Plastic Aluminum and Robot Show.
Year 9 students presented an interesting show about Physics, including Density of Water, How Boats Float, Submarine, The Solar System, Spaceship and Satellite, NASA, Bridge Structure, Airplane Structure, Drone, Household Electrical Circuits, High Speed Train, Automobile in the Future, etc.
Additionally, Ms. Anna Benjapiban, a Year 9 student, wrote a news article about Science Day. It follows here:
Bangkok – Sarasas Ektra School’s science fair was held on Friday August 24th 2018 at Saint John Bosco Building. It was where year 7-9 Ektra students got to learn more about science in different ways and got to improve their presentation and English skills by researching and presenting information they have gathered over the last few weeks.
Tables and chairs were spread all over the basketball court and underneath the building, feature boards, models, and experiments were set out ready for the fair to begin. After the opening ceremony, students from Primary arrived. Everybody walked around with smiles on their faces and food in their hands. There were also primary teachers, secondary teachers, administrators and representatives from Sarasas Pittaya School.
The year 7-9 students had been preparing their projects for two weeks in advance during homeroom period, science classes, lunch time and at home. Every group needed to fill in a set of worksheets, type out reports, prepare a PowerPoint presentation, a feature board for visual aid and experiments or models to display. All their hard work has paid off as the final exhibition day was a success.
There were also a few competitions during the science week. On Monday 20th of August, there was a paper plane competition to see who was able to fly the paper plane the furthest. On Tuesday 21st August, a parachute egg competition was held. Each group was given materials to construct whatever device they wanted in order to make sure the egg landed closest to the target and didn’t break when dropped from the 4th floor od Bosco Building. On Wednesday 22nd August, there was a science quiz competition where the contestants had to answer 20 science questions correctly. Then on Thursday 23rd, there was another parachute egg competition but for year 10-12 students.
“I’ve been blown away by the level of creativity, English, and unity between the groups. I’m also very proud of [how] year 7-9 [students are] being with year 4-6 students because it’s your responsibility to take care of young kids”, said Mr. James W. Gibson, head of foreign staff, when asked about the fair.
“I feel really happy because I got to know how science works”, said MR. Raymond R. Lopez, year 9 science teacher, when asked about how he felt.
“Keep up the good work and most importantly, keep using English”, said Mr. Phil Langley, head of the secondary department, when asked about what he wanted to tell the students.
August 30th
Secondary department and senior secondary students organized their science activity underneath St. John Baptist building. There were different science shows in the activity – Opening Show, Science Presentation Competition (Final Round having Year 10 to 12 as the contestants), and Science Competition Photos Presentation. Additionally, Year 7 to 9 students also had got a chance to have a look at science projects done by Year 10 to 12 students for enhancing their knowledge and experience.
